Offering free Overpaintings by Lodchen

Original work by Dying-Hopes

Uhm... yeah, I did another Paint-over ^^;
Things are going veeery slowly with the new Queen of Nature Piece (working on the Queen of the desert again), so... doing some not so time-consuming stuff is more relaxing I guess ^^
Aaaalso, this was done for a good reason! I wrote some critic on the original piece, and well, I was of the opinion that it was really nice but that the composition could be improved. So I asked for permission to do a paint-over, and here it is :)

So more or less it was done to learn something from it, hopefully for the original Artist Dying-Hopes as well as for myself :)
So, to everybody but especially to Dying-Hopes I'm gonna explain what I changed (what was really not that much!).
Firstly, I changed the contrast of the original image, because I thought it would be more moody if it was darker. Then, like I already mentioned in my critic, I felt that the crystals were really nice, but that their placement was really symmetrical, what didn't look really natural. Also, I personally think that having something really light in the center of the picture nearly always benefits the composition, so I suggested to add a really big and shiny crystal just behind the Character and did the same in my overpainting -or at leats I tried. For heavens sake, I have no idea how they were drawn. Well I looked at them of course, and I tried to draw my own in the same way, but it just didn't work xD So, my compliments to Dying-Hopes, yours look so much better than mine xD So I ended up more or less just copying and pasting the original crystals and just scaling them up xD
So, I personally feel that the composition looks much more balanced now, because before there was lots of blank space, and I feel that the eye now is drawn more towards the center of the picture.
Dying-Hopes also told me that she had trouble with the face, so I tried my best to work on that too. I added the shadows of the eye-sockets and drew her some pretty long eyelashes, and I added some makeup on her lower lashes, too. For the nose I darkened the shadows that were already there, and also added Highlights to make it look more plastic. And because now her face looks kinda flat, I highlighted her cheekbones and her chin, and I also added some shimmer to her lips to make her look more attractive,
The only thing left to do now was increasing the shading on her dress (I darkened the lower part of it so that it wouldn't attract so much attention anymore) and adding some shimmer to the background.
So, as you can see, I really didn't do much with this one, so most of the work clearly was done by Dying-Hopes I think she did a really good job on this one (look how cute these dragons are! Meow :3 La la la la ), so please visit her original work as well and give her some love :3

Thanks again so much for allowing me to do this Overpainting, it was really inspiring for me! :huggle: I really hope you like what I've done :3

You did read "Free Overpaintings" in the title?
Yup, I decided that you may request Overpaintings of your work, if you are of the opinion that
a) You could learn something from my critic (that means that it should be a recent picture)
b) I could help with your picture. That means, obviously you shouldn't ask for an overpainting if you are better than me ;p
Curious? Desperately need help to improve? Send me a Note and I'll try my best to help :)

Kitty Pryde by Lodchen
Kitty Pryde
Hello again ;)
So, this is what the finished picture looks like :D

I am quite happy with how it turned out, especially because I didn't use a pose reference for this one :happybounce:
Her costume and Lockheed are referenced from Astonishing X-Men, while her face was referenced by a picture of Ellen Page. I think you can see that I used a reference for the face because (at least in my opinion) the face looks much better than in my other work Woohooooo! :squee:
Anyway, I won't tell you that I referenced from this Photo, because than you would know how much I suck at portraits OMG! :giggle:

How I do colors - Part II by Lodchen
How I do colors - Part II
Hey guys! :wave:

So, as I have been asked so many times how I do my colors, I finally took the time to do a little Tutorial for the ones interested :)
Thanks to Alexis-Croft for requesting this Tutorial one more time^^

So, in the beginning this whole this was planned more as a walkthrough, so... sorry if I forgot anything. I also realized that this topic is way too big to cover it in just one Tutorial, so I probably will do another one about how I choose the colors I use.
For the meantime I would suggest you just to try out this Tutorial, and feel free to go to my Gallery and color-pick any piece you want ^.-

Torn by Lodchen
Torn
Just a relative quick one to try out a more realistic shading :) (well, I actually did this time ago, but only now did the last retouching etc..)
I think it turned out okay when I take into account that I didn't spend too much time on it, but well... I think I'll stick with my usual coloring style ^.-

But hey, I finally finished something own again xD
But my next work will be more Fanart again, I did some further working on my X-Men Fanart :3 It takes some time, though ^^;

First of all: HAPPY BIRTHDAY DeviantART! :party:

Well, what is my personal DeviantART story? I would say, joining the dA Community marked the point were I decided to really become better, improve my art skills and learn. Since than I to some degree developed my own style, and I met some really lovely and supportive people.
I love the inspiring spirit of dA, and I learned a lot from all the different resources dA provides. I wanted to give something back and did my own Tutorial about digital Art, and it still is awesome to see that people fave it and that it seem to help them :)

So I want to say thank you to all the guys out there, who fave and comment on my work, I appreciate to hear your opinions and constructive critic, and of course all watches and fav'n'runs ;) It's so motivating to see that there are people out there who like my work! ^-^

So, starting with the ArtFeature,

I think I'll begin with :iconpupukachoo: because she was one of the first Deviants I found when I came here, and she still is one of my favorite artists, even though her style has changed much over the last years. I like her new and old work of course, but I kinda miss the creepy n' dark in the newer ones, sometimes ^^;
But back than I really was into Hellsing and all the Manga-stuff, so I was especially excited about her Hellsing Fanart!

Another artist that I highly respect is :iconartgerm:. I love his work soo much, and his work is a great inspiration for me :) I also love that he is doing so many livestreams and that he takes much time to interact with his fans and all this stuff. He really helps his fellow artists out there!
Of course he is mostly known for his Comic Fanart, but I also really like his pepper and samurai artwork and would love to see more of it^^

Another very supportive Deviant that I look up to is :iconlady2:
She creates beautiful artwork traditionally, and her Portrait Tutorials are super helpful. Only with help of them I slowly began to improve my skills in painting faces ^^; I tried dozens other Tutorials before, but only these worked for me.
I really like the butterfly theme that is included in most of her work, and she is a very friendly Deviant who always takes the time to answer on comments of her work :) I really appreciate that ^-^

Also, when it comes to inspiring Artists, the first Artist that comes to my mind is :iconsandara:.
She is an amazing storyteller, and I especially loved her Codex Alera Fanarts, when I first found her -btw. the books are pretty cool, you should read them ^.-

There are many more artists that I would love to mention here, but I think this journal entry already is wayyyy too long, sorry for that ^^;
I only will short-mention some more:
:icongestiefeltekatze: is my favorite photographer, I love her Louis Royo inspired work!
tattoos and witchcraft by gestiefeltekatze lady of the lake, inspired by Royo by gestiefeltekatze dangerous woman II by gestiefeltekatze ritual smoke by gestiefeltekatze

:iconthe-demons-within: is a good friend and the main reason why I started drawing myself!
The Queen Of Butterflies by The-Demons-Within Lara Croft - Tomb Raider by The-Demons-Within The Pumpkin King by The-Demons-Within Gods Of Death Love Apples by The-Demons-Within

:iconizayoi7: is my sister and her critic, while often frustrating, still helps me to improve.

... Also many more, who are just friends or long-time watcher that drop a comment every now and than to let me know that they still enjoy my work ;) Especially thanks to Alexis-Croft and Johndoe1140 for stumbling across my page ages ago :hug:
  • Mood: dA Love
  • Listening to: Alter Bridge
  • Reading: Pride and Prejudice
  • Watching: White Collar

However, you should be my own skill-level for Trades or Collabs. Also, for Collabs I would prefer to do the Coloring :)

Hey guys,
I'm Lodchen, 21 years old and from Germany.
Usually I use a Tablet and SAI, also some few Photoshop if I need special brushes and for the last retouching. I got my first Wacom tablet in summer 2010 when I fell in love with digital drawing =D This year I also came to :devart: :)
I am always very happy to see that you guys like my art, but I'm also happy to hear constructive critic -so please tell me, if you don't like certain things in my drawings^^

Other hobbies than drawing are reading, my dog and hearing music.
In 2012 I also started taking photos, but this isn't as important for me as drawing :)
Anyway, feel free to check out my Photo-gallery as well! :iconlodchen-photography:
